TECHNOLOGY
Strengths | Weaknesses | Opportunities | Threats
Introduction
Technological advancement has touched the modern urban life in almost every aspect, such that we use the technology doing our daily chores without raising any doubt on the capability of systems or machines. Either we are traveling in an Uber taxi, doing a web check-in for our flight or buying groceries online, technology has become an integral part of our daily routine.
We are heavily dependent on different mobile applications, sensor driven systems and other technology enabled machines, because of following reasons:
- Automation
- Productivity Enhancement
- Efficiency
- Error-free
- Ease of Use
Following section highlights few major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to the quicker inventions and growing use of the technology.
Strengths
As highlighted above, technology and continuous innovation enables quality of life, faster production, time saving and an error-free output. Following are the major strength areas where technology has become a boon for mankind:
- Use of automatic machines in industries has resulted into faster production and global market to sell the products
- Innovation in the field of medical field has helped the human kind by saving lives from several diseases
- Banking and Farming sectors are witnessing the transformation as well
- Information Technology itself has created several millions of jobs across the country
- More advanced electronics and home products are within reach now, thus resulting into the raise of overall quality of life
- Mobile and internet has changed the way we communicate and share information, resulting into access to banking, medical, shopping, education, business and other applications on the go
Weakness
The invent of technology also brought several weakness or disadvantages with it. Following are the few key factors contributing of the weakness:
- Rise of machines and automation is resulting into the machine performing most of all the jobs and people are suffering with mental stress and fear of loss of jobs
- There are not enough learning opportunities across the country to gain access to the adequate knowledge and skills related to different technologies
- Innovation or Idea leadership is not part of the core education system
Opportunities
Technological advancement is taking place at a very fast pace, but still there are ample of the opportunities in order to bring impact of technology in rural sector. Following is a list of few such ideas:
- Sensor based fertility check for soil and proper farming advice to farmers for better crop
- Medical aid to be provided in disaster prone or in remote areas using drones
- Village schools to be equipped with internet and video conferencing for different vocational courses
Except rural areas, following ideas would help in other domains:
- Drone based surveillance for safety of borders and other key installations
- Crime analytics for predictive policing, deploying police staff where repeated instances of crimes get reported
- Solid waste management with a central dashboard available to authorities to keep a check on waste and health
Threats
As the advancement happens at fast pace, the loop holes in technology or systems bring several threats to the fore:
- Children are exposed to crime, objectionable content and life-threatening games (recent BlueWhale game)
- There is a steep rise in the case of digital theft, hacking and other technology enabled crimes
- Fear of chemical and nuclear weapons also add up to the list
- Basic infrastructure needs an upgrade to provide adequate operating environment to robots/machines and other artificial intelligence-based systems
